Colorful Graphic Novels Recommendations for Early Readers

For some little readers, transitioning from picture books to chapter books or middle grade reads can be tricky. For example, neurodivergent kiddos can have trouble processing information with visual aids or large-format letters, and reluctant or anxious readers might feel overwhelmed by an abundance of text.

Fortunately, one of the best solutions for these obstacles exists in the form of graphic novels! Whether a reader is transitioning to text-only books or simply building a lifelong love of the genre, early-reader graphic novels are a great way to build reading confidence while engaging kids who are starting to explore longer-length stories.

Here are a few of our recent favs in the early-reader graphic novel format; what are some of yours?

Cloud Puppy: The Pup Days of Summer by Kelly Leigh Miller

Pip & Pals #1: Otter Space! by Jen de Oliveira

Wiggler’s Big Joke by Kaeti Vandorn

A Babymouse Flip Book: LOVE (Heartbreaker + Puppy Love) by Jennifer L. Holm & Matthew Holm

Big thanks to Atheneum BFYR, SimonKIDS, Knopf BFYR, Random House Graphic, Random House Children’s Books, and Holiday House for copies of these books!
