Happy Juneteenth from The Baby Bookworm!

Every June 19th, we commemorate the federal emancipation of enslaved people in the U.S. by celebrating Juneteenth—however, this holiday is so much more than a reminder of this shameful aspect of American history.

Juneteenth is first and foremost a time to celebrate the culture and achievements of Black Americans, and in particular, their resilience as individuals and a community.

Here are two awesome picture books that celebrate Black history past, future, and present. What are some of your favorites?

A Song for Juneteenth by Zetta Elliott, illus. by Noa Denmon

We Are Joy by Chrystal D. Giles, illus. by Kitt Thomas

A heartfelt thanks to Little, Brown BFYR, Hachette Children’s, and Random House Children’s Books for copies of these, and a very happy Juneteenth to our readers!
