In this heartwarming reimagining of Clement C. Moore’s classic poem, a young girl wakes up on Christmas Eve to a mysterious sound. Venturing downstairs, the child spies Santa Claus himself leaving presents for the girl’s family, and in the main departure from Moore’s version, the brown-skinned child marvels that Santa looks “just like me.”
Bradley does a wonderful job of paying homage to the magic of Moore’s poem while offering a Santa that mirrors the race of the main character and her family. It might seem a small thing, but picture books containing a representation of Santa that is any race or skin color other than White are few and far between. It’s a lovely book that is just as timeless as the original while also bringing welcome and much-needed inclusivity to the Santa Claus genre.
