I Hop (Joe Cepeda)

Hello, friends! Our book today is I Hop by Joe Cepeda, fourth in his series of early reading comprehension stories in the I Like to Read series by Holiday House.

Following Up, I Dig, and I See, our story follows the same two young brothers as the youngest goes on a pogo-sticking adventure. After finding a pogo stick at a yard sale, the older brother helps his sibling suit up in protective gear and a helmet, and the younger heads off to run some errands on his new mode of transportation.

Simple storytelling done right. Combining repetitive vocabulary, short words and sentences, and charming yet understated art, Cepeda builds a perfect picture book to engage early readers. One- to three-word sentences are typically the only text on the page, set in easy-legible text against white backgrounds. And while clarity is the goal to create confidence in beginner bibliophiles, the story is still sweet and entertaining, with a satisfying ending. The length is perfect for a very quick storytime, and JJ enjoyed it, especially how easily it was to follow the story through the basic text and cute artwork. Overall, definitely a great series to check out for getting little ones into reading, and we recommend it. Baby Bookworm approved!
