The Story of You (Lisa Ann Scott)

Hello, friends! Our book today is The Story of You, written by Lisa Ann Scott and illustrated by Sue Cornelison, an inspiring look at how we author our own life stories.

You may not know it, but you are writing a story. We are all writing our own story; the things we do and the choices we make fill the pages of our lives and spell out the plot of our adventures. There are moments to try something new, to choose kindness, to ask for help, or to use our voices (even when it’s hard). Each of these choices are ours alone, and each one creates a new and unique chapter in our life story. So have courage, be yourself, and follow your heart – you’re the star of this tale, and the next chapter is all up to you.

Wonderfully empowering. While children can often feel as though they have no agency over their lives, this encouraging title shows young readers that they face choices every day, and encourages them to use those choices to be bold, to be kind, and to do the right thing. Wisely, the rhyming text also assures the reader that moments of indecision, fear, or doubt are just as much parts of their journey and nothing to be ashamed of; they are just as important as the moments of fearlessness or confidence. The artwork is lovely – sweet and cheerful at times, then deeply emotional and moving at others, and the cast of children is wonderfully diverse in terms of gender, skintone, and ability (though sadly, not body type). The length is perfect for a storytime, and JJ enjoyed the inspiring text and colorful artwork. This is a great title for any young bookworm, and we enjoyed it a lot. Baby Bookworm approved!
