Hello, friends! Our book today is Something For You by Charlie Mylie, a charming tale of the power of friendship.

When a mouse pays a visit to a friend and finds her under the weather, he immediately sets to work to help her feel better. He brews a spot of tea, lights a soothing candle, plays some music, and tucks in her blankets; yet still he feels like he can do more. Leaving his friend to nap, he sets off the gather some flowers to help cheer her, stopping along the way to gather some odds and ends for himself and even assist the odd passerby. Finding the perfect, magnificent flower to complete his bouquet, he is ready to return – until a gust of wind snatches every last flower from his grasp. Sadly, he returns to his friend empty-handed… only to find that he already had an even better gift with him all along.

Sweet. While this tale of kindness, selflessness, and friendship doesn’t particularly break any new ground with its narrative or main theme – the ill mouse is happy to reassure her friend that his presence is all she needs to feel better – it’s still filled with lessons in empathy that are worth reinforcing and celebrating. What gives this book its individuality is its creative visual and storytelling style. Text is minimal, mostly used to reference the art and provide the internal monologue of the protagonist. The adorable art is the star of the show; heartwarming scenes with cute and clever details are framed in overlapping panels, which even tell bits of the story on their own (a panel rising at the edges as it’s buffeted by the strong gust of wind, for instance). The length is perfect for a quick storytime, but the tender and appealing art will have little readers perusing again, and learning that being a good friend is one of the best gifts we can give. We loved this one – Baby Bookworm approved!
