Hello, friends! Our book today is Cowhide-And-Seek, written by Sheri Dillard and illustrated by Jess Pauwels, an adorable tale of a playful cow named Bessie.
One day, Farmer Ted begins counting all the cows on his dairy farm; Bessie – distinguishable from her blue-spotted kin by being the only cow with brown spots – hears the countdown and believes it to be game of cowhide-and-sick. Bessie quickly dashes off to hide in a number of places around town, ignoring Farmer Ted’s calls asking where she is. Once problem: the hiding spots are comically too-small for her, such as a soccer ball or a cat. Still, Bessie tries her best, avoiding Farmer Ted and the slowly growing pack of searchers – can she find the perfect hiding spot before time runs out?
Simple yet fun. Dillard does a good job crafting a story with a rhythm that has a level of repetition perfect for young bookworms, a gently silly sense of humor, and a clever ending that will amuse and satisfy. The illustrations have a friendly, open cartoon quality, and Bessie’s character design makes her instantly lovable. The length is great, and JJ loved the story, especially all the “mooooo” puns. Sweet, silly fun, and Baby Bookworm approved!
