Fletcher And The Springtime Blossoms (Julia Rawlinson)

Hello everyone! Today, we read Fletcher And The Springtime Blossoms, written by Julia Rawlinson and illustrated by Tiphanie Beeke. This is a wonderfully sweet story about a little fox and his world as it changes from winter to spring.

Fletcher is on his way to the orchard when he sees a flurry of white in the air. Realizing that winter might not be over yet, he rushes off to warn his friends of the coming snow so they can prepare. But when they return to the orchard for one more frolic in the flowers before the snows arrive, they find a wonderful surprise!

This book was so unbelievably cute. The paintbrush-style art is adorable and enchanting in turns, and the story is charming (plus, I’m a sucker for any book with a lovable fox). The length was good (on the side of long) for a one year old, but JJ really enjoyed it all the way through, so I think most baby bookworms could handle it, and older readers definitely could. Overall, a great book about friends and spring, and Baby Bookworm approved!

And Then It’s Spring (Julie Fogliano)

Summer Reading Day 71: Hello! Today, we read And Then It’s Spring by Julie Fogliano, with illustrations by Erin E. Stead. Based on the cover, one might assume that the book is about Spring, and to some extent it is, but it’s actually more about growing plants. In it, a little boy plants seeds in his garden at the end of winter, then struggles with the anticipation of waiting for his plants to grow and for the world to become green again.

This is a very cute story, and incredibly fun to read. The narration is fun and playful, and it really captures the nervous impatience that every gardener faces waiting for the fruits of their labors to appear, as well as the joy of growing living things; JJ’s daddy, the master gardener of our family, loved listening to the story with us. The illustrations are sweet, simple and charming, and the length is just right for a Baby Bookworm. We absolutely recommend this one, especially for little gardeners.

When Spring Comes (Kevin Henkes)

Summer Reading Day 60: Our book today was When Spring Comes, written by Kevin Henkes and illustrated by Lauren Dronzek. As you might guess from the title, this is a book about the beginnings of spring: flowers, rain, new kittens, etc. It’s a fairly thorough examination of the spring season, told through a simple, lovely narrative and with some colorful and sweet illustrations. The length was perfect for JJ, and she loved the pictures. Definitely a good one to pick up around springtime! Baby bookworm approved.
