Hello, friends! Our book today is Ears, Nose, Eyes… Surprise! by Sarah Jones, a sweet little board book that encourages young readers to use their senses to solve a mystery.
There’s a surprise! But what can it be? Time for the main character – a little boy – to find out by using his five senses. First, he uses his eyes to see something round. Then, his ears hear a strumming sound. Each mystery item is teased in silhouette as the boy indicates the part of his body (nose, hands, etc.) and sense used to figure it out. At last, everything comes together for a birthday party surprise!
This was great! Simple, short, and did a wonderful job of connecting the senses to what parts of our bodies we use them with. The silhouettes are also a nice choice, as they allow to reader to take part in unraveling the mystery where they cannot use their own senses. The rhyming text is bouncy and fun, the illustrations are colorful and cute, and JJ really enjoyed it. A great way to talk about senses with early readers, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!
