There are a lot of scary stories on the news right now, which can rightfully raise a lot of questions and fears in young readers. And while it may be tempting to shield kids from the frightening realities of the world, it’s not a sustainable solution. This is where books like Eden’s Light, written by Jessica McKay and illustrated by Jestenia Southerland, can be helpful for both children and the adults who care for them.
In Eden’s Light, young Eden considers herself a superhero until the day she views an act of police violence on television, crushing her sense of security. The anxiety this causes interrupts her thoughts and sleep, so her mom sits down to give her an honest discussion about racial injustice and finding hope and pride in her own inner light.
Eden’s Light is a beautiful book, and it can help kids and caregivers who are struggling to process the acts of violence that are, unfortunately, fast becoming an everyday reality in the United States.
