Holiday Book Countdown, Day 13: NORTH FOR THE WINTER (Bobby Podesta)

On a move from Arizona to California in 1955, young Virginia spots a reindeer out the car window… a FLYING reindeer. While the adults in her life are dismissive (believing this to be an invention of Virginia, who is grieving the loss of her mother), her new neighbor, Benny, takes her at her word and agrees to help her on a quest to reunite the lost reindeer with Santa.

This hilarious and heartwarming middle grade graphic novel is a perfect holiday mixture of madcap antics and genuine warmth. Young readers are sure to identify with Virginia, and her frustrations at being patronized, and her quick-blossoming friendship with Benny is incredibly sweet. The adventure is also genuinely intriguing and exciting, filled with a dash of danger and a wonderfully satisfying ending.
