HURRICANE (Jason Chin)

Major weather events can be frightening for everyone, but especially for young children. In the face of Mother Nature’s forces, it’s easy to feel worried or powerless. Fortunately, there are books like Hurricane to help young readers better understand both the science of and human response to these types of events.

Following three narratives – a group of scientists tracking a hurricane, a coastal town preparing for landfall, and the storm itself – Chin expertly demystifies hurricanes while exploring their impact on people and communities. There’s a ton of science and wonder to be found on each page, but also a solemn understanding that storms like these can do massive damage. This combines to create a deeply human approach to the appreciation of climate science, one in which the fascination for natural wonders and the empathy for human beings weave together.

Thanks so much to Neal Porter Books and Holiday House for sending us a copy of this one!
