Thanksgiving is less than two weeks away, so naturally, families and friends are making their plans to spend some quality time—and share some food—together. And with groups of all ages gathering to make memories, it’s the perfect time to share a story or two, especially if it’s filled with the same atmosphere as the holiday. So, in that spirit, here are a few of our favorite books that celebrate Thanksgiving and togetherness.
Owl’s Fall Feast Fiasco by Kristen Remenar, illus. by Matt Faulkner

When Owl’s favorite didgeridoo musician, Platypus, agrees to come to the fowl’s fall feast, he’s over the moon! Small problem, though: what does a mammal/bird/reptile eat? A playful send-up of perfectionism and a welcome lesson in accepting differences and asking for help, this is a perfect read for a slightly chaotic holiday.
Thanksgiving Is a Blessing by Rachel Tawil Kenyon, illus. by Udayana Lugo

What makes Thanksgiving great? Well, the food, sure. But there’s also family, community, friends, and kindness, all of which are explored in this multi-faced picture book. From gathering supplies for the local food bank to Turkey Trots to sharing recipes, this title proves that there are many ways to give thanks and be together on Thanksgiving.
Two-List Thanksgiving by Christine Whan, illus. by Sienna Youngsun Kim

As the young, biracial narrator of this title explains, her family has two lists for Thanksgiving: one for the Korean market and one for the local market. A lovely exploration of how blending traditions—and cuisines!—can bring families together during the holidays, this charming title also serves up some unique fusion dishes that will make mouths water.
Turkeys in Disguise by Cynthia Platt, illus. by Josh Cleland

Thanksgiving can be a joyous occasion for many… but fairly nerve-wracking if you’re a turkey! Sympathetic to their feathered friends’ plight, a group of children attempts to save the turkeys of their town from the chopping block by dressing them in all manner of disguises. Purely silly fun with a feel-good ending and plenty of giggles along the way!
America Gives Thanks by Bob McKinnon, illus. by Thai My Phuong

A seasonal look at how U.S. figures have protested, advocated, and legislated for positive change throughout history, this follow-up to America’s Dreaming puts the reader into the shoes of the titular character as they take a class trip to the nation’s capital. Telling abbreviated stories of change-makers like Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Marian Anderson, kids will learn that occasionally, complaining is the right thing to do (like when it inspires justice).
Corduroy Gives Thanks by Don Freeman, illus. by John Joseph

Who among us can resist the charming little stuffed bear in the green overalls? In this precious board book, Corduroy and his best friend Lisa run Thanksgiving-prep errands around their neighborhood—picking up turkey, bread, flowers, etc.—while expressing their thanks for the myriad of workers and friends who make their community special.
Happy Friendsgiving: A Thanksgiving Celebration of Found Families by Marcie Colleen, illus. by Laura Sandoval Herrera

Sometimes family isn’t blood relations, but the family we’ve found and formed through friendship. Following a diverse group of all ages as they engage in Thanksgiving preparations and celebrations, this wonderfully modern look at Friendsgiving is a fantastically festive read for everyone, but especially for those who have their own families of choice.
Family Feast! by Carole Boston Weatherford, illus. by Frank Morrison

From the children’s book legend Carole Boston Weatherford and the brilliant artist Frank Morrison comes this gorgeous treat. Following a multigenerational family as they prepare for their family feast with plenty of activity, noise, and love, the warm atmosphere and scrumptious soul food are a satisfying feast for the eyes and the heart.
How to Say Thank You by Jean Reagan, illus. by Lee Wildish

There are so many things to be thankful for year-round, especially when spending time with loved ones. Whether it’s a trip to the parade with Grandpa, sharing a snack with a friend, or simply meeting a new neighbor, each special moment shared with the special people in our lives is something to be thankful for, as this charming book indicates.
Gather Grateful by Megan Litwin, illus. by Alexandra Finkeldey

With a focus on the cozy colors of autumn and the ties between the human and natural worlds, this book is easily the most visually striking of this list. Following groups of animals in parallel as they fly together, gather food, and share love, this stunning title perfectly captures the thing to be most grateful for during the Thanksgiving season: each other.
Thanks so much for checking out these titles! We hope that you and your young readers enjoy them, and have a very happy Thanksgiving!
