Now I Know My Avocados (Among Other Things) (Stephanie Wykoff)

Hello, friends! Our book today is Now I Know My Avocados (Among Other Things) by Stephanie Wykoff, a unique and fun alphabet seek-and-find.

On each page, readers are invited to pick out items, animals, vehicles, plants and so on that match with the letter of the alphabet shown. Using a playful palette of oranges, blues and tans, each spread is a whimsical hodge-podge, such a fireside fox watching a football game being played beside a farm from across a river of fish, which in turn are illuminated by a flashlight. A glossary at the back provides a complete list of the objects to identify.

This was fun! It definitely had a fresh visual style about it, and I loved the unique illustrations and the way the items were incorporated together – each spread even extends across two letters, so the illustration is one continuous scene of “I” and “J” objects, for instance. There is very little text, only two couplets that open and close the book plus the glossary. To be honest, I might have enjoyed the glossary for each letter being on the same page, as it might have created a sort of checklist for readers as they identified to objects, especially since the color scheme made some objects less recognizable for little eyes, but that’s purely a personal preference. As it is, nearly every object was easily identified by me, and JJ had fun learning about the objects she did not yet recognize. The length is what you make it, and I could definitely see young readers having fun with the clever visuals. A great choice for an interactive storyline, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!
