Hello, friends! We’re back today with a review of The Good Morning Book by Lori Joy Smith, a delightful look at some familiar – and very unfamiliar – ways to greet the day.
Good morning! That’s how we start the day in English, anyway. In Italian, it’s “Buongiorno”, of course. And in Japanese? “Ohayou.” But in far off places, where the languages are completely unknown, the morning greetings may be a bit different. Haystacks may wish each other “Bleepings!” and a garden gnome may holler “Too La Roo!” A yeti may say “Mest Wishes!” to the rising sun, and a ring of stones will say “Guden Took!” to the rainbow overhead. There are lots and lots of ways to say good morning – how do you like to say it?
Absolutely adorable. Between the bright, colorful kawaii-inspired paintings that make up the illustrations to the cheerful morning wishes, both international- and nonsense-language, this one charms from start to finish. The fun, silly greetings are a hoot for even the smallest bookworms, and JJ loved hearing and mimicking each new one. From an educational standpoint, I would have liked to see a few more real-life morning salutations in other languages (the reader is only given three), but the main theme of the book does not suffer from the lack of them. It’s short and sweet enough to squeeze into a pre-breakfast routine, and quite simply puts a smile on the face. Baby Bookworm approved!
