Fidget And Scoot Discover The Rainbow (Michelle Spray)

Hello, friends! Our book today is Fidget And Scoot Discover The Rainbow by Michelle Spray, a sweet story about how rainbows came to be.

It’s a lovely day: the sun is shining, a breeze is blowing, and animals are scampering. A summer storm begins to form, letting loose some rain over happy flowers, and ending as suddenly as it began. And in the wake of the storm, two angels named Fidget and Scoot appear. They notice a band of colors hanging low in the sky, and decide to lasso it to make swings. They make rope swings for themselves, each playful moment further bending the colors into a crescent. At last, the two little angels have created a rainbow: one part sun, one part rain, and one part magic.

As with many self-published books, this one’s a bit rough around the edges, but it has some positives going for it as well. The story does a good job of introducing rainbows (the process of rain to sun, the colors/ROYGBIV), but then gets lost somewhere between being a fable and educational fiction. The art is a bit generic, but then also offers a few truly adorable visuals (a happy daisy enjoying its rainbath was a personal favorite) and a great use of bright, vibrant color. The finished product is a bit underwhelming compared to the polished look and feel of books by trade publishers, but it’s positives are enough that it’s worth the read. The length is fine, and JJ enjoyed it, so overall, we can call this one Baby Bookworm approved!
