Summer Reading Day 63: Today’s book was Chalk by Bill Thomson, a pictures-only book about some very special sidewalk chalk. Normally I’m not a huge fan of the pictures-only books for JJ, as hearing the story seems to be one of her favorite components of storytime, we both really enjoyed this one. The story itself is fantastic, and doesn’t really need any text or dialogue to create a wondrous yet gripping tale. Instead, the gorgeous photorealistic art brings the characters and their adventure to life, and kept JJ’s attention just fine as I described the story to her. The length is obviously as short or as long as you make it.
Personally, I’ll always prefer stories with text because JJ seems more entertained by them, but this picture book was pretty awesome, and would be fantastic for older kids.
