La La La (Kate DiCamillo)

Hello, friends! Our book today is La La La, written by Kate DiCamillo and illustrated by Jaime Kim, a stunning story of loneliness, hope, and the power of song.

A little girl sits alone in her blank white home. She sings aloud to herself (“La la la!”), then tries to call out to others with her song, but she hears no response. Determined, she ventures outside to a quiet forest of falling leaves and giant plants, she tries singing to each of these things in turn, but again gets no response. She begins to grow discouraged, but with twilight she makes a grand discovery: the moon has arrived. She attempts to sing to the moon, but again is ignored. Feeling dejected, she returns to her home and sings alone once more… until a great voice fills her ears, echoing her song in perfect harmony.

Absolutely gorgeous. Told in nearly no words – the only dialogue being the collection of “La’s” that make up the singing – the reader follows the girl’s story of finding a friend through her own self-expression and hope. The visuals play a huge role in this, and absolutely astound with rich colors and striking visuals. It’s a short length to read through, but this one is as much about exploring the forest as the little girl does, and children with vivid imaginations will love doing so. JJ and I both really enjoyed this one – we especially had fun making up our own songs for the “la la la’s”. A fantastic and touching tale, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!
